Feb. 2007 Outreach Committee
Report
____________________________________________________________________________________________
This year our goals have remained the same: to help meet need in our Church and
community and to reach out with programs and service in other parts of our
country and abroad.
Local Programs
North Shore Hospital Day Treatment Center – During inclement weather Christ Church makes the gym available to this group for exercise and physical activities.
Manhasset Girl Scouts – Troop #531 and Troop #534 meet in the Parish House on Wednesday and Thursday every other week.
LICC - Food for the Hungry – Christ Church is a long time contributor to the Food Pantry located in Freeport and run by the Long Island Council of Churches as an emergency food bank. Our collection of food for this program has been organized and supervised, as always, by Lette Snodgrass. The collection baskets are always available and donations of non-perishable food is welcome at any time; but the fourth Sunday of each month at Christ Church has been set aside as a collection date. Usually in the week following the fourth Sunday, Lette with the help of Carol Allen deliver the collected food to the pantry in Freeport.
The Sunshine Ministry – This group continues to meet every Thursday to send notes to parish members and friends who are ill, housebound, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries or other events in their lives.
Manhasset/Great Neck Equal Opportunity Community Center – Christ Church donated $1,000 to the EOC for their summer program.
National and International Programs
UNICEF – Children’s participation in TRICK OR TREAT project during Halloween.
Operation Christmas Child – A project of Samaritan’s Purse, an International Relief Organization that provides gifts, toys and toiletries to children around the world. Susan Bunyon organized this program within the parish and with the Sunday School and under her direction Christ Church was able to send out 60 shoeboxes wrapped and filled with gifts.
Coats for Kids – This program sponsored through the National Dry Cleaners Association requested that we collect gently used winter coats for children and adults in need. We are happy to say that Christ Church collected 18 large 30 gallon plastic bags of coats and delivered them to Mineola where they were dry cleaned and distributed through the “Coats for Kids” program to needy children and their families in the area.
Adopt a Family Program – The Family Consultation Services of the Diocese of Long Island sponsored a program through which families in need can receive Christmas gifts. The parishioners of Christ Church adopted 10 families which included 27 children all of whom received clothing and toys for the holidays.
Northport Veterans Hospital (VAMC Veterans Affairs Medical Center Volunteer Services) – Parish members were asked to send greetings to the patients at the Northport Veterans hospital. A note of thanks was received from the hospital staff commenting that the veterans were very appreciative of our efforts. As we hope to continue this ministry year round we encourage all parish members to drop off cards in the rear of the church or the Guild Room to be forwarded to the hospital. The cards should be general greeting cards with a note of hope, encouragement, get well or thanks for serving our country.
Episcopal Relief and Development – Individual members of the parish continue to support different programs.
Working together our Christ Church family has been able to reach out and make a difference to some of those in need. Thank you to all who have helped.
Respectfully submitted,
Marianne Templeton, Chairman
The Outreach Committee: Amy Angus, Betts Carpenter, Lucy Chaly, Debbie Czeglédy and Lette Snodgrass.
